Recent increases in precious metal values have changed the way businesses must protect their assets, and according to Goldman Sachs, increases are set to continue.
For manufacturers, security professionals and jewellery retailers, rising asset values provide a reason to review whether existing storage remains proportionate to the value of the stock being protected. A safe can remain fully operational while becoming less appropriate as stock values increase.
Display cabinets, stockrooms and safes can remain unchanged for years, even as the value of their contents rises. That growing gap between the value being protected and the level of storage in place can create unnecessary exposure.

It is not only insurers and underwriters who may take an interest in rising asset values. High-value precious metals can also be attractive targets for theft because they are compact and readily transferable. Attack methods have also moved on, which is why the EN 1143-1 standard now includes T2 certification that tests safes against modern power tools alongside traditional methods.
When reviewing storage measures, businesses should consider the wider security context. Installing a new safe may be an important step, but it is only one part of the overall approach. It’s time to start asking yourself a few questions:
Does your storage reflect the current value of your stock, or the value it held when it was installed?
Do your day-to-day procedures such as access, keys and authorisation, provide preventative security measures?
Is your safe independently certified?
The discussion guide, “When Asset Values Rise, Should Storage Be Reviewed?”, explores these questions in greater detail. It considers areas including specification, installation, insurance requirements and independent certification, helping businesses begin a more informed review of their storage needs.
